American Chemical Society Scholars Program

The American Chemical Society awards renewable scholarships to underrepresented minority students who want to enter the fields of chemistry or chemistry-related fields. Awards of up to $5,000 are given to qualified applicants based on academic standing, financial need, career objective, leadership skills, and involvement in school activities and community service.

If you are an African American, Hispanic or American Indian high school senior or college freshman, sophomore or junior pursuing a college degree in the chemical sciences or chemical technology, you may be eligible for an ACS scholarship.

Application deadline: Applications will be accepted Nov. 1, 2008, through March 31, 2009, for the 2009-2010 academic year.

Merck Index Women in Chemistry Scholarships

"Established in 2007, The Merck Index Women in Chemistry Scholarships are designed to encourage women to pursue careers in medicinal or synthetic organic chemistry. Each year, Merck & Co., Inc. will present five, $5000 scholarships to women entering into their first year of an organic chemistry PhD program in the United States or Canada."

Award: $5000 scholarships to women chemists entering a PhD program in synthetic organic or medicinal chemistry

Eligibility: - Applicant must be a woman accepted into and planning to attend a PhD program in chemistry in the US or Canada beginning in the fall semester of 2009 (US or Canadian citizens planning to study in Europe may also be eligible, please contact This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ; Students currently enrolled in a chemistry PhD program are not eligible.)

Lloyd Iverson Scholar Program

The OU Federal Credit Union is offering a scholarship in the amount of $500.00 to full-time undergraduate students attending the University of Oklahoma who are members of the Credit Union. The student selected will be designated as a Lloyd Iverson Scholar and their name will be placed on a plaque listing all such scholars. Students in all areas and majors will be considered. The scholarship will be awarded at the OUFCU Annual Meeting. The scholarship will be primarily based on merit and service. Interested applicants should submit a letter of interest, resume, and at least one letter of reference from a professor. To be considered, you must follow all rules clearly stated on this application. The application packet should address:

• Academic performance at the University level (Transcript required)
• Current scholarships and honors
• Aims and intentions after graduation
• Service within and outside the university community
• Indication of need for financial support

ACS Priscilla Carney Jones Scholarship

"The Priscilla Carney Jones Scholarship was established by Paul R. Jones, in memory of his wife. It provides scholarships for female undergraduate majors in chemistry or related disciplines who are beginning their junior or senior year of study. Priscilla Carney Jones wished to have this scholarship established because of the difficulties she faced as a female chemist early in her career."

Award: The scholarship is a one-time award on the basis of both need and scholarship. The award amount is subject to available funding, but will be a minimum of $1,500. The award is sent directly to the recipient’s financial aid office and may be used for tuition, books, and lab fees. On-and-off campus housing, transportation, and other personal fees (e.g., sorority dues) may not be paid from this award.

Eligibility: To be considered a candidate, students should meet the following criteria:
    * Rising junior or senior female undergraduate student
    * Enrolled full-time at an accredited college or university
    * Major in chemistry or chemistry-related science
      Students in pre-med programs who intend to go to medical school are not eligible for this scholarship.
    * Completed research or plan to conduct research during undergraduate years
    * Minimum overall GPA of 3.25
    * US citizen or permanent resident
    * Able to demonstrate evidence of financial need according to an award letter from the applicant’s institution and estimated unmet need for the upcoming academic year
