I am graduating with my MS, what form(s) need to be filled out and when?

Admission to Candidacy– must be completed the semester before – see specific timeline at gradweb.ou.edu

Application for Graduation is submitted the semester you are graduating to the Office of Academic Records

How do I change from MS to PhD?

You must request to change your major code with the graduate college online at gradweb.ou.edu.

All PhD requirements and guidelines will apply.  This online request is only available at the beginning of each semester. Please see the graduate college webpage for details.

Can I take out of department courses and have them qualify toward my masters?

Yes, see page 4, Section II A. #3 of the MS Program Requirements.  Please note that all such outside courses must be approved by the graduate committee.

How will my progress be evaluated in the program?

See page 7, Section IV and page 9, Appendix B of the MS Program Requirements.

How many credits of Independent Study/Directed Reading can I use toward my degree?

The maximum number of CHEM 5990 Independent Study hours is 9 and the maximum number of CHEM 5960 Directed Reading is 6.

Do I have to enroll in Colloquium each Fall/Spring semester?

Yes!

What is the minimum number of credit hours I must be enrolled in during the semester I graduate?

You must be enrolled in at least 2 hours.  However this does not qualify you for any Tuition Waiver or Health Insurance benefits.  You must enroll full-time (6 hours in Fall/Spring and 3hours in Summer) if you have a qualifying TA/RA position in order to receive a tuition-waiver or health benefits.

How many credit hours are considered full-time status?

Six credit hours during Fall/Spring or 3 during the Summer with a TA/RA appointment.

Nine credit hours during Fall/Spring or 4 during the Summer without a TA/RA appointment.

How do I qualify for a Tuition Waiver?

You must enroll in a minimum of 6 hours of graduate creditduring Fall/Spring or 3 hours in the Summer.

You must have a .5 FTE TA/RA appointment (.5 FTE is considered a standard appointment).

You must be in good standing in your program of study. 

 MS - Thesis Option (specific to Thesis Students only)

How many credits do I need to graduate and what are the distribution requirements?

You must have 30 credit hours total to graduate.  See page 4 of the MS Program Requirements for more detailed information.  

How do I choose a Major Professor?

This is done in the first semester you join the program.  See page 4, Section II B.#1 of the MS Program Requirements for more detailed information.

How many committee members do I need for the Thesis?

You must choose 3 members in at least 2 divisions in the department.

How many hours of CHEM 5980 Research Masters Thesis can I take?

There is no limit on how many you can take but be aware that only 6 credit hours of CHEM 5980 will count toward your degree.  Also note, students must be enrolled in 2 hours continuously per Spring/Fall once these hours are started.

MS - Non-Thesis Option (specific to Non-Thesis Students only)

How many faculty must I have for my non-uniform exam?

You must have 3 faculty in at least 2 divisions in the department.
